MSc in “Disaster Management”

Master programme:

Disaster Management

The MSc in Disaster Management is a 2 year full-time program, taught in Romanian, in the field of Environmental Engineering.

Graduates of the program will acquire skills to organize emergency interventions and to take preventive measures for specific emergency situations.

The program offers the possibility for students to assess risks, vulnerabilities and emergency capacities, to assess and plan costs and expense priorities, to identify rehabilitation methods following an extreme event, to manage and organize rescue actions, conduct safety and risk analysis, to investigate causes of fires, failures and accidents, to manage and solve specific environmental issues, to plan recovery and logistic activities.

Practical work experience in the form of field visits and industrial visits are a key component of this curriculum.

Course contents:

The 4-semesters master degree program offers a diverse set of courses, related to different aspects related to disaster management.

SEMESTER 1

  • Risks and disasters management 4 ECTS
  • Chemistry and detection of explosives and supertoxic compounds 5 ECTS
  • Natural risks and disaster management 6 ECTS
  • Technologic disaster management 6 ECTS
  • Monitoring of atmospheric pollutants 4 ECTS
  • Research fieldwork (120 hours) 1 ECTS

SEMESTER 2

  • Emergency situations management 6 ECTS
  • Eco-responsible entrepreneurship 4 ECTS
  • Human health risk factors 6 ECTS
  • Ethics, communication techniques and academic writing (in English) 4 ECTS
  • Legal Instruments for environmental protection at international level 6 ECTS
  • Professional fieldwork  (80 hours) 4 ECTS

SEMESTER 3

  • Fires and explosions risk assessment (in English) 6 ECTS
  • Methods and techniques for environmental impact assessment  6 ECTS
  • Fire risk management, emergency situations logistics 6 ECTS
  • Optional course 1 5 ECTS
  • GIS and disaster management 6 ECTS
  • Research fieldwork (130 hours) 1 ECTS

SEMESTER 4

  • Emergency medicine 6 ECTS
  • Disaster risk communication 6 ECTS
  • Risks of dangerous substances transport 4 ECTS
  • Optional course 2 6 ECTS
  • Research fieldwork (130 hours) 3 ECTS
  • Elaboration of Dissertation Paper (80 hours) 5 ECTS

Optional Course no. 1:

  • Principles of industrial hygiene in refugees camps
  • Response and Intervention to Specific Emergency Situations

Optional course 2:

  • Atmospheric Risks and Remote Sensing
  • Obtaining and Reading Environmental Data

Career prospects:

Students will have a wide field of employment options in the private, public and semi-public sector or she/he may choose an academic career by continuing with PhD-studies in a relevant field.
